You Know More Than You Think You Do. Back Yourself and Start.
What if you started before you had it all figured out?
Last year I built a website for someone who was still working out exactly what her small business was going to be. And at the time, that might have sounded like a red flag. But it wasn't.
On our first call, we clicked immediately. Both of us had recently left the corporate world to build something of our own — something neither of us had ever imagined doing. She was still working out her offering. Still figuring out exactly what she wanted to offer. But she had a clear vision, and she wasn't afraid to trust herself and jump in anyway.
So that's what we built around. Not a finished product. A launching pad.
Something that gave her the credibility and professional signal she needed to start making connections, having conversations, and have to the confidence to put herself out there.
Fast forward eight months.
We got back together recently for a working session on her site, and I couldn’t believe how the connections she made helped to build upon and rethink her original vision.
The space she's in has exploded. The industry shifted, opportunities opened up, and it began to feel more crowded. But instead of chasing every trend, she's been intentional — refining her services, getting clearer on her ideal client, and leaning into what actually makes her different (and what she enjoys doing!)
What she started with last year has grown into something that feels more like her than anything she could have planned from the beginning.
And now we have a plan to update her site to reflect exactly where she is today — the testimonials she's earned, the certifications she's added, the clients she's served. All the things that build real trust with the right people.
That's what happens when you stop waiting for perfect.
The thing most people get wrong about starting a business
There's this idea that you need to have everything figured out before you build a small business website. The offers locked in. The niche defined. The brand fully formed.
I know what you're probably thinking — it feels backwards to put yourself out there before you feel ready. Like you're setting yourself up to look unfinished.
But from what I've seen, most of the people who waited until everything was "ready" ended up waiting way too long. And the ones who started before they felt fully prepared? They figured it out faster — because having a real foundation pushed them to get clear in ways that thinking about it never could.
Your website isn't a final answer. It's a starting point. And a good one gives you room to grow into it.
Let’s talk about what matters
If you're thinking about starting a business and feel like you need to have it all together before you build a website, here's what I'd focus on instead:
Back yourself. Your brain will find every reason to wait. Do it anyway. Confidence comes from doing and learning from mistakes, not from having a perfect plan.
Start with your mission. You don't need your services perfectly packaged on day one. You need to know what you're about and who you're for. The rest gets clearer as you go.
Build in room to adjust. Nobody gets it exactly right the first time. The fact that you're doing it at all counts for something — and your site should be flexible enough to grow with you.
This is the whole philosophy behind how I build websites
When to build a website isn't really about timing — it's about having enough to say and a willingness to start. You don't need a finished business to have a strong small business website. You need a foundation.
Start with that. Leave room to grow. Build something that can adjust as your business evolves — because it will.
The goal isn't to create a site that's perfect right now. It's to create one that actually serves you, both where you are today and where you're headed.
Don't wait until you have it all figured out. You won't. And that's okay.
Start anyway.
