DIY vs. Hiring a Designer: What's Actually Right for You
You need a website. Or, you have one, but it’s pretty dusty.
If you’re going back and forth on whether to build yourself or invest in a professional to build your site, there’s no universal right answer. It really depends on where you are in your business, and what you actually need your website to do for you.
Here's how I think about it:
DIY makes sense if...
You have the time (and the patience) to map out the experience, learn a platform, and then build it
Your business is still figuring itself out, and you don't want to over-invest yet
You enjoy the process — some people genuinely like building it themselves or have the background to do it
Your needs are pretty simple: a clean one-pager, basic info, nothing complex that a template can’t solve
Hiring a designer makes sense if...
Your time is better spent running your business and not staying up until 2am to build your website in off hours
You've outgrown "good enough" and need something that actually reflects your work
You want someone thinking through the strategy — not just the layout, but how people move through your site and what happens after they land on it
You're tired of getting stuck on the same things every time you try to update it yourself
You care about all the little details that typically get missed if you’re building for the first time - like accessibility, favicon, mobile experience
And there’s a bonus option I share with people…
It doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing decision. I've worked with clients who wanted the initial foundation done professionally and then learned to manage updates themselves (something I always teach clients who want to be self-sufficient) - this is a great middle ground.
